Siblings

by Ryan Rowell

Lately we have been photographing quite a few family sessions and these 2 adorable little girls remind me so much of my sister and I growing up. They are about the same age apart as my sister Jackelyn and myself. I don’t remember much from the time in my life when I was 2 or 3 years old and Jackie was only a mere few months, the only things I remember are scenes from photographs taken of us. Its amazing how many memories are triggered by photographs. I look back on photos my mom used to take of us on Sunday’s before church when she would dress us up, or even images from our first days of school before Jackie was even old enough to go to school. I think to myself how incredibly amazing it is to have these memories. My mom was saving them for us our whole lives. Its an amazing gesture to preserve the past for the future.
As photographers, we consider ourselves very lucky to have the ability to do this for other people. In my personal opinion, family photographs should be a bigger priority for families. We photographed a family of 4 kids last summer who were all in their mid 20’s and they had never had a family portrait taken, ever!
It is really sad when families don’t preserve their history and carry on their legacies. Growing up we only had a hand full of family portraits taken, the last one being when I was 10 years old.

I hope one day when I am old and gray that I don’t wake up and forget the gap in my life where family photos do not exist.

I am sure that I don’t say it enough, but I am so lucky to have a sister. She means more to me than anyone in the world. I am truly thankful for her.
